Dam of Priboj

Excerpts from articles with reference to Rissalma:

Pearson, Colin A. "Influence Of The Crabbet Horses On Russian Arabian Breeding Programs". Arabian Horse Times December 1981. W.S. Inc., Waseca, Minnesota. p. 312.

"Rissalma had four daughters retained for breeding. The first daughter FLORENCIA by the Crabbet stallion Faris was born in 1936 and was probably foaled shortly after Rissalma was purchased. Florencia had a daughter PARFUMERIA who was the dam of the stallion KNIPPEL whose blood has been widely used in the Tersk Stud. Unfortunately, Parfumeria had no daughters retained for breeding. This shows the degree to which horses are assessed in an independent manner in Russia. In Western horse breeding for example, if a mare has a son who has been a successful stallion, her further produce is much hallowed and revered and sold for very high prices. This does not appear to be the case in Russia. Parfumeria had a stallion, Knippel, who was a successful horse at stud. But, this in no way influenced the authorities about the retention of further stock from her. Much the same thing occurred with Rissalma's half sister, Rixalina, the dam of the stallion KOREJ. He was widely used in the Tersk Stud but only one of Rixalina's daughers, Nagrada, had a daughter who was retained for stud purposes. This high standard of culling obviously is reflected in the horses that are being bred in the Tersk Stud at this time...very active, free moving horses of sound conformation. And now that fresh lines have been introduced they the animals and types in a large number of cases.

Descendants of the mare NATURALISTKA (by Naseem out of Rissalma), have offspring that have been sold to Holland, the U.S.A., the U.K., Albania and Poland. The Naturalitska line is still breeding on in Russia. Although the line of Rissla through Rissalma and the line of Rissla through Rixalina might appear to be rather brief, this is not really the case. Nagrada (Naseem x Rixalina) was the dam of the stallion KANKAN. Kankan's sire was Korej (Kann x Rixalina) so Kankan was a horse with 75% Crabbet blood in his pedigree. Rissla's daughter Rixalina was the dam of the stallion Korej, who had more sons retained for stud purposes than any other stallion with the exception of Priboj. Priboj, we remember, was out of the Rissla daughter Rissalma. Here we have a family stemming from the mare Rissla...a sire family in the U.K. as well as in Russia.

This sire producing family in Russia produced the stallions Kankan, Priboj, Korej and Knippel. No other family from any source in Russia has been able to equal that. Perhaps when a female line is prevalent in a male line of horse being used in the Tersk Stud the authorities do not consider it that necessary to retain many of the female progeny from this particular family.

I don't wish to be at all partisan and claim that all of the good things in Russian horses come from the Crabbet blood in them. That would be because the Russian horses are a very clever blend, of French, English, Polish and Egyptian blood lines.

When we come to look at the stallions which are being used in Russia today, it is pertinent to note how very much dependent they are on the Crabbet blood lines. No other female line could anywhere near match the Rissla line for producing four top class stallions which are used widely in Russian breeding. The Rissla line suffered a great loss with the death of Topol because he carried Rissla blood and also traced to the mare Star of the Hills. So Topol had a large proportion of Crabbet blood in his pedigree."
